Yes I know that the starling murmuration has been happening for more than a week now, but I haven’t had the chance to catch up with it myself until today. But what a spectacle it is!! About thirty people turned out today to see them come in to roost today and they weren’t disappointed. Static pictures really don’t do it justice, but I thought I’d publish a couple more anyway.
It’s quite humbling to imagine just how such a huge flock of birds can career around in formation without bumping into one another. Scientists who’ve studied such things have concluded that its possible with just a couple of simple rules. If my memory serves me this consists of
1. follow the bird in front at a constant distance and
2 keep a constant distance from the bird to your left/right
so long as they ALL follow the same rules then no problems arise.
If you have the chance to get along here sometime in the next few days then with the weather set fair we can hope for a few more wonderful displays.
