Excellent winter bird watching

Bittern in front of Ivy North Hide

Birds seen on the reserve today included:

Black necked grebe, 2 common scoter, 432 greylag geese, 2 ruddy ducks, 52 Goosander, 4 goldeneye – Ibsley Water

Bittern, great white egret, little egret, water rail – Ivy Lake.

The late afternoon starling roost to the west of Ibsley Water has been huge the last 3 days, with estimates of between of 15,000 – 20,000 birds present. They are best viewed from the Tern hide car park looking west towards the A338, from 3.30pm with the majority of the action over by 4pm.

A fantastic prehistoric looking gathering of cormorants on Ivy Lake. I particularly like the colours of the trees and white areas caused by the birds droppings. Cormorants are one of my favourite birds, a primitive species still doing reasonably well despite lots of persecution by humans.
